Discovery Trail Hydropower Rinerhorn

The Hydropower Adventure Trail starts at the Jatzmeder mountain station, where you’ll find the first stop on the trail, dedicated to water sources. From there, the trail leads through the forest to the Nüllisee reservoir. Here, a barbecue area and firewood provided invite you to take a leisurely break. The trail then runs along Rinerhornstrasse, featuring various interactive stations on the theme of hydropower, all the way to the valley station. There, to round off the walk, you’ll find the turbine house, which is open to visitors. You can view the two turbines up close, gaining a fascinating insight into electricity generation. The adventure trail takes you along gravel tracks, forest paths and short sections of the cantonal road. You can also find the route on Outdooractive.

• Stay on the paths: This protects the delicate flora and fauna. 
• Respect nature: Please do not pick plants or disturb the animals. 
• Fairtrail: Be considerate of other visitors (cyclists, walkers, scooter riders, etc.) 
• Take your rubbish with you: Please take home whatever you bring with you.

  The trail offers a brilliant combination of fascinating facts, games and fun for young and old alike. Right at the mountain station, a playground and a petting zoo invite visitors to explore before the adventure trail begins. Along the way, a barbecue area provides a cosy spot for a break, and at stop 5 there’s a fantastic water playground that’s a big hit, especially on warm days.

• School groups
  The adventure trail provides a vivid introduction to hydropower and renewable energy. At the various stations, topics such as the water cycle, kinetic energy and other fascinating concepts are explained in an age-appropriate manner. The trail is specifically designed for pupils in Years 3 and 4 of primary school. On request, we are happy to provide teachers with supplementary teaching materials.

• Groups 
  On request, we offer guided tours of the pump house (below Lake Nüllisee) and/or the turbine house. During these tours, the technical processes involved in electricity generation and snowmaking are clearly explained and explored in depth. Participants gain fascinating insights into how the facilities work and learn more about the processes behind energy generation and snowmaking.

The Rinerhorn ski resort has been partially covered by artificial snow since 1991. Since then, the snow-making infrastructure has been continuously expanded and modernised. The idea of creating a reservoir to collect meltwater and rainwater, the overflow from the tapped drinking water sources, and surplus water from the Rieberbach and Leidbach streams arose at an early stage. At the same time, the aim was to generate sustainable electricity through the construction of a small-scale hydroelectric power station. 

In the summer of 2020, the Nüllisee reservoir was completed, followed in December 2025 by the commissioning of the Rinerhorn small-scale hydroelectric power station at the valley station. 

During the planning of the small-scale hydroelectric power station, the idea for an educational trail on the theme of hydropower also emerged. The aim is to give visitors a clear, vivid and interactive understanding of sustainable electricity generation using hydropower. Construction of the themed trail began in spring 2026.
